John Luther Cox, often called “John Luther” by his immediate family, entered this life on February 5, 1949, in Tippah County, Mississippi to Willie Murray and Jamie Cox. At age 72 he entered eternal life on Friday, September 17, 2021. He passed at his home where he lived with his wife, granddaughter and great-grandson.
John Luther was baptized at an early age at Moses Chapel United Methodist Church located in his hometown of Ripley, MS. He received his high school diploma from Line Street School and thereafter attended College in Tennessee.
John moved to Chicago, IL after tending to home duties in his early adult years. His stay there was brief, and he soon settled in Milwaukee, WI where he lived for nearly 22 years. In the year of 1977, he joined Prince Hall, Tyre Lodge No. 8 where he remained an active member until his death.
On April 5, 1980, he married the love of his life, Marilyn M. Schwartz. Of this union John Luther, with his wife Marilyn, raised their son Dennis aka “Pumpkin.” They spent their time with Dennis as loving parents until his death in 1997.
In 1998, John Luther, along with his wife and granddaughter, moved back home to Ripley, MS. He enjoyed being back home near family and longtime friends.
John Luther Cox had a definite and unconditional love for his entire family that will linger in our hearts forever.
John Luther Cox was preceded in death by his parents Willie Murray Cox and Jamie Cox Storey, his son Dennis L. Schwartz, his sister Bernice Spears, his brothers William Earl and Charlie Timothy Cox.
He leaves to remember him his loving wife Marilyn, those he cared for as his own children, Henry “Boom” Schwartz, Shannon “Bob” Cox, Asheena “Sheen” (Fernando) Simmons, his grandchildren Theasia “Hootie” Schwartz, Ashawndra “Rock” Simmons, Anastasia “Squeaky” Simmons, and his great-grandson Dennis “Buster” Tribble. His siblings Dennis (Deborah) Cox, Charlotte (Curlie) Rutherford, and Elizabeth (Paul) Shack. His in laws Debra Chester, Sheri Wetzel, Carolyn Cox, Amanda Cox, Gween Spears and a host of beloved uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, September, 24, 2021 from 12p-8p at Foster & Son Funeral Home in Ripley, MS with the family present from 6p-8p. A funeral service will be Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 3p at Foster & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley, MS. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service at the chapel. Interment will follow at Boyd Cemetery in Ripley, MS.
